Beetroot, with its sweet earthy flavour, is an undemanding crop that can tolerate most conditions, although it needs regular watering in dry spells. If seed is sown too early, the plant may bolt; you could try a variety called Bolthardy, which is bolt-resistant.

It’s easy to see when beetroot are ready for cropping, and all parts of the plant are edible, so nothing is wasted.

These colourful rubber containers will hold a good deal of compost, making them ideal for growing carrots and beetroots. Sow seed in the tubs where they are intended to grow as they will be too heavy to move later if you change your mind.
